Hello and welcome.

Do you know of any evidence that treating diarrhoea with loperamide actually increases the duration of gastroenteritis? All cases or just those thought to be infectious diarrhea?

Regarding gastroenteritis, I read that loperamide will decrease stool frequency and improve quality of life, but not alter duration of illness or risk of dehydration. Further, if bacterial infection is suspected, antimotility agents can increase the risk of intestinal perforation. This is anecdotal of course, but is a widely held belief by expert panels; see The Management of Acute Gastroenteritis in Young Children and Guideline for the management of acute diarrhea in adults.

If you're going to discuss this can you make sure to also update the Simple English article since it's a major source of death in places where people speak little English, and it's a good article to have translated into many uncommon languages. You can save some lives by doing that, perhaps. There should be dozens of such articles in Simple.
