Hi there Furrykef. I noticed your work on fingerpicking, and the guitar wikibook (good work by the way!), so was wondering if perhaps you can answer a question for me... I fingerpick, but seem to have taught myself an unorthodox style in which I use my pinky finger for the 1st string (thus my ring finger for 2nd, middle for 3rd, index for 4th and my thumb for 5th and 6th). I somehow got it into my head when I was learning that this would be more efficient, as with all fingers in use I might be able to one day do some more complex picking... Hmm.
Have you heard of this style of picking before? Do you know why the pinky is not usually used? --Chopchopwhitey 02:06, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
This is actually very close to the way I fingerpick (at least when I play "Money for Nothing", the song I play most often as it's the first I learned), though I'll pick differently for different songs based on what strings I use most often, whether or not I use the whammy bar, and whether or not I'll need to do any tapping. I think the pinky is often unused because it's easier to play properly if the hand is supported, which is what the pinky is doing. There are lots of other places the pinky can be placed if you need to use the first string but don't want to pluck it with the pinky...e.g., the pickguard, the side of a pickup (the way I often do it on a Les Paul for some reason; wish I actually owned one), or gripping the side of the whammy bar (my favorite "alternate place" for it since it can open up a world of techniques). --Furrykef 04:20, 22 May 2004 (UTC)

- Well, I added some info to fingerpicking, but in brief hybrid picking means using both a pick and fingers. -- Jim Regan 08:22, 22 May 2004 (UTC)
