Isaac Levitan (1860-1900) was a Russian painter who advanced the genre of the "mood landscape." Born into a poor but educated Jewish family in Augustów, in what is now northeastern Poland, he entered art school in Moscow at only 13. Among his teachers was Alexei Savrasov, who taught students to paint en plein air. This Golden Autumn dates from 1895. From 1897 Levitan headed the landscape studio at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Levitan, suffering from heart disease, died in June 1900, aged only 39.
