Dear Paul - way back in 2007, you learnt from edits I made to the wikipedia page for the Yale Political Union, that I had been involved with the 1986 YPU trip to Washington DC, and I promised copies of the trip's itinerary, which had the remarkable four days of visits to high level officials. I believe at the time I was unable to locate them in my masses of old papers, even though on my own wikipedia author page, you wrote that I had e-mailed them. I can't find any record in my yahoo e-mail from that period that shows I did send the document, and in fact just now (April 2014) I found the paper in some old stacks. May I e-mail you a scan? You can contact me through my wiki author page, or more directly to my yahoo e-mail: saltwater thief. I hope this reaches you all this time later. Best, Jim L. Y'87

August 9 2009 -- Paul, I located the YPU Washington Trip agenda (3 pages) we discussed two years ago. If you remain interested in a copy, I can send you a pdf. Contact me via my wikipedia talk page. Thanks!

June 6: Thanks -- and one more thing, I did find last week a snapshot of one of the members handing a Yale baseball cap to Casper Weinberger during the trip, which I will include when I get more. but what I really want to find for you is the group photo. The YDN covered it (we invited one of the reporters to come along on he trip for free), although pictures they took were never run in the YDN that I recall.

June 6: Hi Paul, I could not find the papers at the time I last corersponded, and i looked again in one large folder I thought it might, but no luck. I am certain I would never have thrown out my copy of the YPU Washington Trip schedule, its just buried somewhere. I'll try to find it over the coming weeks. It may take me time, but I wont; forget, and no, you aren't at all being a pest toremind me. I actually thought about it as recently as a week ago, but I've been swamped. cheers. BoolaBoola2

Hi Paul, Thanks for the reply. I'll look in my old papers for the Washington Trip itineraries, and if I can find them, I'll shoot a pdf to you at your .edu address. I'll also see if I can find the YDN pictures -- they loaned the YPU the negatives from which I made some prints. If I can't find the intinerary, at least I'll be able to recall 90% of the offices/officials visited. The Wash trip would be a nice practice to re-institute for the YPU as a whole, if you have the people/manpower who could organize it. The prestige of the organization opens the doors, and what a joint trip does is to build the social bonds of the otherwise opposing partisans. The explicit reason I recall the Wash trip was open to non-members was as a mechanism to recruit new members, people who were intrigued at the trip even if they didn't see themselves (yet) as on-campus policy wonks or debaters. One other thing, the AYA might have coded their alumni files to indicate YPU membership -- IF -- the YPU provided membership lists to AYA. This would be a way to reach back to your alumni for both tangible contributions as well as recollections and other support. If this wasn't done in past, you should see if AYA will do so going forward. One other idea: The Yale Angler's Journal, in only a few years, has made its annual dinner a big deal for alumni. The YPU could do the same thing; your alumni can help keep your organization stronger and avoid a new slump as in the 90s. I'll be in touch by e-mail in the next few days. BoolaBoola2
