Visa requirements for Icelandic citizens are administrative entry restrictions imposed on citizens of Iceland by the authorities of other states.
As a member state of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Icelandic citizens enjoy the freedom of movement to live and work in other EFTA countries under the EFTA convention.[1] Moreover, under Iceland's membership of the European Economic Area (EEA), Icelandic citizens also enjoy freedom of movement within all EEA member states.
The Citizens' Rights Directive[2] defines the right of free movement for citizens of the EEA,[3] and all EFTA and EU citizens are not only visa-exempt but are legally entitled to enter and reside in each other's countries, solely on the strength of their identity cards.
Icelandic citizens can travel on their Icelandic identity card within EU, EEA and EFTA states. Additionally, within the Nordic Passport Union no identity card, is formally required. Travel to other countries requires a passport.
As of 2024, Icelandic citizens had visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 184 countries and territories, ranking the Icelandic passport 10th tied with passports from Latvia, Slovakia and Slovenia in the world according to the Henley Passport Index.[4]
