Westbourne School for Girls

Westbourne Gardens School for Girls opened in September, I877 and in 1991 merged with The Glasgow Academy. Among the patrons were Sir John Burns, John Gray McKendrick, Regius Professor of Physiology at the University, Thomas Martin Lindsay, DD FRSE (Professor and Principal of the Free Church College, Glasgow and Sir James Marwick, one-time Town Clerk of Glasgow. Many of the backers of the school were also involved with the foundation of Queen Margaret College in Glasgow, the first women only college in Scotland. The intention was to provide girls with a broad curriculum. As well as the academic subjects the girls played sport and worked on art, design & embroidery. The school, produced some of the earliest female graduates from the University of Glasgow. In 1991 the school merged with The Glasgow Academy
