Why is the red tag at the very last part of the portal. Please fix it. --Extra 999 (Contact me + contribs) 03:09, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Open for a month with no comments in support for promotion at this point in time, will likely close and archive in another week. -- Cirt (talk) 04:49, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Give me some time while I'm looking over it. Poke me if you haven't heard anything within a week. OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:55, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alright to start things off: right underneath the 3 tabs, it says "Canada - show another". The "show another" is ambiguous. Do you mean show another country or show another entry about Canada? And for goodness sake, when you wrote diversity of Canada, I was shocked when it points to Outline of Canada when I was expecting it to point to Multiculturalism in Canada. Related portals section look like a big mess scrambled together. Could you split it into separate categories like 10 provinces + 3 territories, cities, and others? Please revise these points. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:01, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank you for taking the time to point this problems out...1 ="Canada - show another" Done. 2 = diversity of Canada - Done
3. As for the portals not sure i can do much here,,,This is a page seen on all 20 Canada portals and the layout was talkabout extensively... First we have portals that cover all of Canada then the provinces and territories in order of joining Canada. ,,then regions then cities. Moxy (talk) 14:35, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Perhaps you can add divider bar(s) and subtitle to separate the provinces + territories with others (e.g. cities, regions, cultures)?OhanaUnitedTalk page 21:33, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Done Related portal reorganized in new coding see--> Portal:Canada/Related portals Moxy (talk) 05:39, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Just curious why Portal:Canada/Selected symbol/35 doesn't have a beaver picture. OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:33, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Fixed that. :) -- Cirt (talk) 03:43, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok guys whats going on? ...lets looks at this closely as this is the 4th portal our project has brought here and we just dont know what more you guys need to get to FA level. Bellow is what we did by the guidelines . pls if you see something that needs fixing let us know because at this point we have no clue what is wrong and y we cant get our portals to FA level. I do see an image or 2 missing out of 300 pages.
Portal guidelines
- Required
- Required - A short summary of the topic. If possible, this should contain an attractive image emblematic of the topic. Done info from the main FA level article with 3 random photos in lead (intro).
- Categories – Links to the most important categories related to the topic. Done - with a cattree
- Subportals or Related Portals - Done listing all the Canadian related portals in a nice layout as per recommendations above
- Topics – Links to the most important articles related to the topic. Done - on its own page since subject is so broad '=
- Recommended
- Browsebar - Done
- Selected article - The first instance of the article title should link to the full article. Images should not use thumbnail formatting unless the background color of the portal content is specified as "transparent" (typically in the box-header subpage). Keep images small; 100px (as on the Main Page) is best. Remember that in compliance with WP:NFCC, non-free images cannot be used outside of articles. Done with 43 selections.. but we have only linked the article at the end...as this is optional and we are using the format of the 20 other portals in this series.
- Things you can do – Any relevant ongoing collaborations Done again on its own page because of its mass scope.
- Wikimedia, Other projects, - Done as per the norm.
- Optional
- WikiProjects – A list of any WikiProjects related to the topic. Done again on its own page because of its mass scope.
- In the news - Frequently updated headlines related to the topic Done setup with wikinews.
- Did you know? - Interesting trivia related to the topic Done with to many to count most were on wikimain page at some point
- Selected biography - Done 19 selections...we have 3 in GA review that will be added after review!
- Selected picture – Images should have captions detailed enough for viewers to understand the context. Be sure to test the portal at 800x600 resolution to be sure images are not too large. Do not use thumbnails Done with 25 selections
- Many other content boxes are possible - We have added a Selected quote - Symbols of Canada and Selected panorama
- Article selection
Of high quality, either a featured article, a good article or one which deals with its subject substantially or comprehensively. Done used FA/GA - former FA/GA and Top Importance articles.
Good number means about 20 articles, though this figure may vary from case to case and is intended as a rough guide rather than a hard principle.' as mentioned above we have 20+ on most!!
Hoping to get some feed back here we are hoping to do many more if we can understand what is needed !! Moxy (talk) 00:21, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Looks good to me, any other objections? If not, then I'll close and promote in a few days. OhanaUnitedTalk page 16:02, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Bencherlite's comments
Oppose for now
Firstly, the talkpage of the portal has no banner notifying that it has been nominated for Featured status, which is a surprising omission. Only those who lurk here, rather than those who read the Portal, would know about this candidacy. This might explain why few have commented so far. I suggest putting the required notice on the portal talk page and extending the discussion period.
Reading through the portal's contents, I find a number of things to mention:
- I think it is very odd to have the "nominate new content" bar so near the top, before people actually get to see what the existing types of content are. Suggest moving this lower down.
- Again, I think it is odd to have the DYK factoid before the selected articles etc. Suggest moving this lower down.
- On the subject of the DYKs:
- You don't need to link "Read more" in bold to the article in question at the end of the sentence; DYK doesn't do this.
- "More..." - more what? You have "more articles, more biographies, more symbols" etc, so find a word or phrase to use here to make it consistent
- Whatever you do, please don't have "Read More" with two capital letters, as that's just wrong here.
- Why not have more than one DYK in a set? You're not short of options of hooks to use, so I suggest grouping them in sets of three, as with other Featured Portals.
- Selected articles / biographies:
- The first mention of the article should be in bold and linked. The other Featured Portals do this, so I don't see why the the guidelines shouldn't be followed here (the fact that other Canadian portals don't is not much of a precedent as far as I'm concerned). Some of the blurbs do have a bold and linked first mention, so at present it's inconsistent anyway.
- The length and format of the "blurb" is inconsistent. Some are short, some are long, some are one paragraph, some are as many as three or four. Stick to one standard length, preferably one paragraph as per the Main Page Featured Articles, where the suggested character count is 1200 characters including spaces (see WP:TFAR).
- Article 43 is a biography
- Remove references from the blurbs.
- Selected quotes
- Please give us the name on the main portal page of the person being quoted
- Please give on the sub-page the reference for each quote, not just a "more information" link. We need to know who said it, where / when, and where the quotation is sourced from. I'm not content with links to Wikiquote to verify quotations, since (a) other wikis are not reliable sources - you should use their sources instead, and (b) even if the material is properly referenced there today, there's no guarantee that this will still be the case tomorrow.
- Selected paranoramas
- Give credits for the image, as is done with most though not all of the Canada in pictures section
- You don't need a "more information" link because it doesn't add more information, it simply links once again to the location already linked in the caption
- Decide whether the captions are using bold or not but be consistent, as at present several different options are used (everything in bold apart from the link, nothing in bold apart from the link, nothing in bold)
- Captions that are not full sentences should not have full stops / periods (whatever you call them in your version of English) at the end of them
- Canada in pictures
- Again, be consistent with the use of bold
- Again, be consistent with the use of credits
- Don't link to foreign-language wikipedias e.g. photo 4
- Picture 24 has no links, nor does 26
- Don't give dual-language captions (French and English).
- Selected symbols
- I think once again that there should be bold links to the article about the symbol in question. In any case, I see no reason to link "Flag", as it's a common-enough word not to need linking.
- Again, inconsistency as to the use of bold / links
- Remove symbol 30, copyright issues
- Check symbol 28, the image it was using has been deleted and so the caption now makes no sense
- On the indices sub-page
- My recollection is that the use of scrolling boxes breaches WP:ACCESS - why not display it in full anyway?
- Why not include Featured Lists and Good Articles in the content box? Why not highlight this on the main page instead of on the sub-page?
- Categories: please spell out the abbreviations of provinces / territories, for the benefit of people not from Canada
- Personally, I don't see why the material needs three pages rather than at most two anyway.
I'm sure this can get FPo status in time, but I don't think it's there yet. BencherliteTalk 12:43, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Ok many things here i cant do as per consensus on how the Canada portals should look like. Most seem to believe that the layout should not be changed so it matches the other portals in the group... AS this seems to be more important then the the FA status for us at this point..Plus i no long have the time as i did when this was nominated. SO i guess withdraw this nominations and thank you guys for your time. I now understand y the other 4 portals did not pass. Perhaps some of this stuff mentioned above could be in FA criteria, as lack of this information would explain to me y so many portals are not passing. I simply do not have the time to copy edit 500+ pages just to look like other portals Moxy (talk) 01:07, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
