Per a request at
WP:RFC, this discussion is closed with the consensus being that ticker symbols are not necessary in the article lead. The view receiving the most support was that by
MZMcBride (with 48) and the second most support was that by
Dicklyon (with 26). No other view received over 10 !votes of support. The main difference between the two views is that MZMcBride advocated the removal of the ticker symbol from the lead prose if it was mentioned in either the external links section or the infobox while Dicklyon opined that the external links section was not prominent enough and that the link should be in the infobox or other prominent location. The consensus view that the article lead should not contain a link to ticker symbols if it is linked in the infobox is clearly established. What should happen if an article does not have an infobox is less clear. However, given the propensity for Wikipedia articles to seemingly magically sprout infoboxes, I do not foresee this being a large problem. The obvious solution would be to add an infobox. There was also concern, raised here and elsewhere, that this RfC was improperly formatted and thus invalid. It was correctly rebutted that this format has been widely used and is the standard on RFC/Us, and thus the concern was rejected. -
