Kelly Brianne Clarkson (born April 24, 1982) is an American singer, songwriter and occasional actress. Clarkson came into prominence after becoming the winner of the inaugural season of the television series American Idol in 2002 and later was the runner-up in the television special World Idol in 2003.

In 2002, immediately after winning American Idol, she was signed to a US$1 million recording deal with RCA Records. She made her chart debut in September 2002 with the number-one double A-side single "Before Your Love"/"A Moment Like This". In 2003, she released her debut album Thankful, which had a R&B/pop sound and became a commercial success and included the hit single "Miss Independent". In 2004, she shifted to a pop rock-oriented sound and released her second album Breakaway, which became a critical and commercial success worldwide and spawned the international hit singles "Breakaway", "Since U Been Gone", "Behind These Hazel Eyes", and "Because of You". Breakaway became her most successful album to date. In 2007, she shifted to a more rock-oriented sound with the release of the third album My December, which had moderate success and produced the hit single "Never Again". In 2009, Clarkson returned a pop rock sound with her fourth album All I Ever Wanted, which was a critical success and produced the international hit singles "My Life Would Suck Without You" and "Already Gone". In 2011, Clarkson developed a dance-pop sound with the release of her fifth album Stronger, which was a commercial success and generated the worldwide hit singles "Mr. Know It All" and "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)", with the latter-most becoming her most successful single to date.

Aside from being renowned for her title as the "Original American Idol", Clarkson is also widely known for her voice, vocal versatility, and personality. She also appeared on various singing competitions such as The X Factor, The Voice, and Duets. Her music work also gained her numerous accolades, including three Grammy Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, twelve Billboard Music Awards, four American Music Awards and a Women's World Award. To date, Clarkson has sold 12 million albums in the United States and 23 million albums worldwide, making her the most successful national Idol in history.
