Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts/Global visual art taskforce

"Girl reciting the Qu'ran" by Osman Hamdi Bey (d:Q69257018)

According to research first published in 2021, Wikipedia gives much more coverage to art and artists in the Western canon than to other artistic traditions. The paper compiles lists of significant artists and masterpieces from different cultures. To help redress the balance, those lists have been added and updated here.

The point of this task force is focus effort on turning red links blue, and improving the existing articles. Feel free to extend the lists with other artists and masterpieces from the relevant culture. In listing artists and masterpieces, we necessarily had to make some arbitrary decisions, so if you know of art and artists that are equally significant to the ones mentioned here, feel free to add them.

The artists should all be notable according to English Wikipedia guidelines, though some are not well documented in English-language sources. The masterpieces should be notable enough for Wikidata, but not necessarily notable enough for Wikipedia (or notable separately from their artists). Some of the links we have given are to help identify an art work and are not necessarily usable as reliable sources for a Wikipedia article. Before starting an article, do your own check that there are sufficient references to establish notability. If you find references that could be used to create a new article, please add them in the final column of the relevant table.
