Welcome to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR)!

Our objective is to turn red links into blue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that, according to Humaniki, only 19.98% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed? Content gender gap is a form of systemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome to participate in the work of Women in Red!

Celebrating BBC 100 Women

Wikimedia BBC 100 Women is a partnership between the BBC and Wikimedia. Its objective is to raise awareness of the gender gap on Wikipedia, improve coverage of women and encourage women to edit. BBC 100 Women is one of the BBC’s most successful news series which names 100 influential and inspirational women around the world every year, creating documentaries, features and interviews with them, as a way to look at women’s rights around the world. It is broadcast on the BBC World Service’s TV, radio and online services in 28 languages and bbc.com to reach global audiences of over 320 million a week. The series is entering its fourth year in 2016 and will be on air between 21st November to 8th December.

There are three ways you can participate!

  1. Virtual participation: Women in Red will facilitate a virtual editathon from 21 November to 15 December, extending a week beyond the dates set by the BBC. Anyone, anywhere, can participate anytime.
  2. In-person events: On 8 December 2016, edit-a-thons will be held in BBC Broadcasting House in central London, at BBC Archives in Reading, and in locations around the world where there are BBC bureaux and active Wikimedia communities: Beijing, Cairo, Cardiff, Delhi, Hong Kong, Islamabad, Jerusalem, Kathmandu, Kabul, Miami, Nairobi, Rome (Italy), São Paolo and Washington, DC.
