Wind power in Australia

[1]Wind power, derived from wind turbines, plays a crucial role in Australia’s energy sector. As of October 2023, the nation has an installed wind capacity of around 9,100 megawatts (MW), making wind power a key component of Australia's energy landscape. It accounts for approximately 5% of the country's total primary energy supply and 35% of its renewable energy supply. Australia's geographical features, including its southern regions and the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range, are particularly conducive to wind energy development. Notably, nearly half of Australia's wind farms are situated in coastal areas.

In December 2022, the Federal Government officially designated the Bass Strait off Gippsland as Australia's first offshore wind zone.
