The World Summit Awards (WSA) rewards Information and Communications Technologies projects that have a positive impact on society at the local level. The award was initiated in 2003, within the framework of the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society.[1] After the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 56/183.[2] The awards are open to companies, organizations, or individuals from any of the UN and the UNESCO Member States.[3] They are divided into 8 different categories.[citation needed] The world summit awards are managed by the International Center for New Media (ICNM),[4] a non-profit organization based in Salzburg, Austria.[5] ICNM was founded by Peter A. Bruck,[6][7] in 2002.
