Zhang Jiuling

Zhang Jiuling (simplified Chinese: 张九龄; traditional Chinese: 張九齡; pinyin: Zhāng Jiǔlíng; Wade–Giles: Chang1 Chiu3-ling2) (678 or 673[1] – 5 June 740[2]), courtesy name Zishou (子壽), nickname Bowu (博物), formally Count Wenxian of Shixing (始興文獻伯), was a Chinese poet and politician of the Tang dynasty, serving as chancellor during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong.

  1. ^ According to Zhang Jiuling's biographies in both Old and New Book of Tang, he was 68 (by East Asian reckoning) when he died.
  2. ^ Zhang Jiuling's epitaph (《唐故尚书右丞相赠荆州大都督始兴公阴堂志铭并序》) by Xu Anzhen (徐安贞) indicate that Zhang was 63 (by East Asian reckoning) when he died on the 7th day of the 5th month of the 28th year of the Kai'yuan era. (公之生岁六十有三，以开元廿八年五月七日薨，...) An inscription (《文献张公神道碑铭》) by Xu Hao (徐浩) also gave the same age at death, but only indicated his death as occurring in the 5th month of the same year (生岁六十有三，以开元廿八年五月薨).
